I’d hung on during the daftness of Twitter > X as I found it a great place to go to find information and things, plus many businesses, magazines, journalists, citiziens have used it to get short breaking points out; whether that’s the new product, a traffic update, something happening in their part of the world.
As the enshitification ensued (and it’s not the only place or resource that this has happened to) something different to the usual decline of leaving forums or messaging platforms happened. I know people were shouting about ‘it’s full of fascists’ and ‘how much disinformation’ and ‘it’s showing me things I don’t want’, but since I didn’t follow things like that I was okay.
And then my timeline started showing me things I didn’t want to see. I was surprised that I’d be offered things well outside my thoughts and beliefs. I mean, okay, so it’s good to find NEW stuff, but finding someone ranting about political stuff that’s making me actually ANGRY because of how wrong it was, or how obviously it was a propanganda-bot… I found myself writing angry responses, and then stopped becuase… Well, I didn’t want to be angry.
So it went on okay for a while.
Over the last few days, I’ve been seeing posts from ‘political commentators’ that were forced on my timeline as they were Ads. Obviously clickbaity Trump-appeasing stuff. Things designed to smell of racism, but not LOOK like it to get you to respond. Things that people without critical thinking might beleive WITHOUT thinking. And I started to respond again.
And then I thought ‘Nope, I’m out.’
So there it goes – I’ve deleted me re_reech\reechme Twitter account that was in place since the beginning. No more fail whale. No more twitterstorm.
I’ve tried other things around, and bluesky seems the most coherent because, lets face it, it looks exactly like the early 2010 era of Twitter. https://bsky.app/profile/reech.me.uk
So, done done. I guess I’ll have to use it to look up things like the avanti and other train related stuff until those companies finally move off (or if they never do, I’ll be keeping an eye there forever) but to stop myself getting angry and trying to get through to people I’ll not be posting. Discourse, both civil and strange will be over on bluesky now.
